A Weekend to Remember

Friday, January 18, 2008
We tried something new today. Rather than walking through the halls of the hospital Emily's PT had her walk between a set of parallel bars. At first she wasn't so sure she could do it without her trusty walker but little by little she gained confidence and began to test the waters. She turned to the sides and held onto one side of the rail and then rotated to the other side. She spent a lot of time exploring and as she did she made small movements with her braces. Eventually her PT walked her across the length of the bars and while doing so... SHE TOOK HER FIRST STEP!!!! Both her PT and I had tears in our eyes. I looked over at him and the look of accomplishment on his face was priceless. It was so nice to see her smiling during a session. This session was the first time that she really seemed to enjoy what she was doing.

Today we picked up both Dada and Papa at the airport. They landed within one hour of each other. We took Emily's braces and walker and met Dada with them on first. He was so excited to see his little two year old girl (after two weeks). Emmy was equally excited to see her Dada. By the time Papa arrived, Emmy was standing with her walker and eagerly awaiting his arrival. He was just as excited to see our standing up girl.

Today we celebrated Emmy's second birthday. Her real birthday was on the 10th but Dada was gone then and Nana, Papa, Auntie Becky, Uncle Robert, and the kids were all able to be here this weekend to help us celebrate. The chosen theme this year was Fisher Price Little People. Emily has become quite fond of them so it seemed fitting to use for her birthday party. Emmy's favorite dinner is spaghetti so we served that along with fettuccine, garlic bread and salad. For dessert we had strawberry cake and vanilla or chocolate chip ice cream. Mommy decorated a Little People cake and Emmy opened numerous Little People toys along with clothes, gift cards, puzzles, dolls, and more. It was a wonderful birthday party and extra special because there were so many family members (and friends) here to help us celebrate.
